Botox Q & A
What is Botox®?
Botox® cosmetics have been used since 2002 to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. It comprises tiny amounts of purified botulinum toxin protein. This protein has been shown to temporarily reduce the muscle activity in areas that are causing wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, the area between the eyebrows and the forehead. While Botox® has been used for more than 20 years to treat neurological disorders in the rest of the body, it has been closely studied for safe usage in the face with positive results. These studies have concluded that Botox is safe, effective, and allows for quality results with very little downtime.
How long do the effects of Botox® last?
You will begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours of your treatment. While results may vary, they can potentially last for up to four months, at which time repeated treatments will be necessary. Dr. Russell will discuss your treatment areas prior to your procedure and give you a detailed analysis of what to expect during the procedure, how long the effects should last, and how to care for your skin to ensure you see maximum results.
Are side effects associated with Botox®?
Botox® has been studied intensively to determine the risk of side effects. The results of the studies conclude that side effects from Botox are extremely rare. No confirmed cases exist of Botox® spreading outside of the recommended areas when it is used appropriately. However, Botox® may cause muscle weakness, vision problems, or dizziness. If this happens, you are advised to contact Dr. Russell immediately for further consultation. In rare cases, an allergic reaction has been reported, resulting in redness, itchiness, rashes, welts, or asthma-like symptoms. It is important that you discuss your medical history with Dr. Russell before your procedure so she can determine if Botox® is right for you.
