Laser Hair Removal Q&A
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. It works by beaming highly concentrated light into hair follicles in which the pigment absorbs the light, and the follicle dies. Most lasers can treat an area the size of a quarter in seconds and cause dark hair to die, permanently removing unwanted hair.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Dr. Russell uses Viora’s IPL and Laser Hair Removal Treatment system to remove unwanted hair. Clinically proven to be safe and effective, Viora’s hair removal treatments are fast and require no downtime. By using phototherapy technology, you will notice a significant reduction in your hair growth from the first treatment. And since these lasers rely on light, rather than the traditional use of heat, no numbing creams are involved, and no risk of scarring or burning occurs. Best of all, it is possible to get rid of your unwanted hair in a very short appointment. Treatment of small areas, such as the upper lip or underarm, only takes 15 minutes.
Will my hair grow back after I have laser hair removal?
All hair does not grow at the same time. In fact, hair grows in four stages: Early Anagen (early growth), Anagen (active growth), Catagen (regression) and Telogen (dormant). Since laser hair removal works only on follicles in the Anagen state, only about 25 percent of your hair is removed with each treatment. The expectation is that hair that was once dormant will enter a growth phase between treatments, resulting in smoother, hair-free skin with each successive treatment. Changes in hormones, missing treatments, or not following Dr. Russell’s recommended guidelines can result in hair growing back in areas that had been previously smooth. We consistently see laser hair reduction of 90% or greater with at least six treatments. Touch up treatments for 6-12 months are sometimes necessary for certain areas and hair types.
